Improving Behavioral Healthcare for Latino Populations

3:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 2, 2019

Join a group of others who care about the mental and behavioral health of all of those in our community by watching the webinar together at Everence, 1110 N. Main St., in Goshen. The webinar will begin at 3:30 p.m. Or watch from your own device from work or home.

Dr. Margarita Alegría, PhD, will lead the webinar exploring behavioral health trends and needs in the U.S. Latino population and how Elkhart County providers and partners can work to provide improved support. Dr. Alegría is the Chief of the Disparities Research Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital and a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

The Center for Healing & Hope was included as one of the Goshen College Community Group Representatives in a national research study conducted by the Disparities Research Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital. This webinar offers findings from four years of research that included focus group participation and scheduled interviews with the intent to identify key stakeholders from community groups, consumers and policymakers aimed at reducing racial/ethnic disparities in mental health outcomes and services. The Center for Healing & Hope initiated the Goshen Resident ID Card as one actionable outcome to address heightened Latino anxiety in our community.

Dr. Alegría is currently the principal investigator of four National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded research studies: the International Latino Research Partnership; Effects of Social Context, Culture and Minority Status on Depression and Anxiety; Building Community Capacity for Disability Prevention for Minority Elders; and Mechanisms Underlying Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Mental Disorders. Learn more about Dr. Alegría here.
